Our Team
Dr Bart Eijkelkamp
Bart completed his Master's degree in Biomolecular Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2007. In the following year he commenced his PhD at Flinders University, investigating the antimicrobial resistance and virulence features of Acinetobacter baumannii, a highly significant human bacterial pathogen. Upon completion of his PhD in 2012, Bart took up a position as a post-doctoral researcher in the Research Centre for Infectious Diseases at the University of Adelaide. He continued his research into the resistance and virulence features of major bacterial pathogens, with a strong focus on the role of metal ions and host lipids on bacterial fitness. Whilst at the University of Adelaide, Bart was awarded a Beacon Research Fellowship which allowed him to establish his own research group. In 2019, he returned to Flinders University where he continued as a Lecturer in Microbiology and research group leader. Bart is a keen homebrewer and enjoys working with a range of microbes to generate “funky” beers.
Maoge (Lawrence) Zang
Maoge (Lawrence) completed his Bachelor of Science (biotechnology) at the University of Adelaide in 2017 and soon commenced a 2-Year Masters study in the same institution. His Masters’ research project throughout 2019 was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Bart Eijkelkamp with a primary focus on understanding the antimicrobial resistance of A. baumannii which sparked his interest in pursuing a PhD since 2020. In his spare time Lawrence enjoys gaming, movies, and cooking up a storm in the kitchen.
Alice Ascari
Alice completed a Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) at the University of Adelaide in 2019 with majors in Biochemistry, and Microbiology and Immunology. In her final year, Alice undertook a placement with Bart’s supervision looking at Acinetobacter baumannii silver nitrate susceptibility, which peaked her interest in infectious disease research. In 2020, Alice commenced her PhD, which uses Shigella flexneri as the model organism to investigate surface polysaccharides and key membrane proteins in pathogenesis. She is currently undertaking her PhD collaboratively with Bart (Flinders University) and Assoc/Prof Renato Morona (University of Adelaide). Outside of the lab Alice enjoys spending time with family and friends, swimming, cooking, and going to the beach.
Jack Waters
Jack completed a Bachelor of Science (Biomedical) at the University of Adelaide in 2019 before moving to Flinders University to undertake an Honours year under Bart’s supervision. Enjoying the research, he has since pursued a PhD where he will be observing lipid homeostasis at the host-pathogen interface among different bacterial pathogens. Outside of university, you can find Jack going for a hike, run, or bouldering.
Brynley Davies
Brynley studied the Bachelor of Medical Science at Flinders University, finishing in 2021 with first class Honours, initially out of interest for the science of the human body. However, in studying infectious diseases he discovered a love for bacterial pathogens and their molecular physiology. As part of Brynley's doctoral project, he is currently studying lipid homeostasis regulation in Acinetobacter baumannii and other bacteria throughout their nosocomial lifestyles. When outside the laboratory, living the life of a mere eukaryote, he enjoys watching films with friends, learning about the world and being an uncle to his six niblings.
Ella Haracic
Ella has completed a Bachelor of Medical Science at Flinders University, completing majors in Biotechnology and Microbiology. Ella, with her keen interest in microbiology, will undertake an Honours year under the supervision of Bart in 2022. Ella enjoys going to the beach, and hikes.
Inaki Voelcker-Sala
Inaki studied Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne, finishing in 2019 with majors in immunology and microbiology. Inaki is currently studying medicine at Flinders University and researching how Acinetobacter baumanii deals with silver nitrate and antibiotic stress. Outside the lab, he is a keen rock climber and beekeeper.
